Beyond the Cairn - 1 Day Creative Photography Workshop, Cairngorms National Park.

Since 2022 the Cairngorms National Park has felt like a second home to me. Having explored this vast area by biking and hiking to some very remote locations, I have developed a deep connection to this landscape. These wanderings have ultimately led to my Beyond the Cairn series, which was published in Black + White Photography magazine issue #285. This project seeks to evoke the recurring motifs that we find in the landscape. By adopting a mindful approach to the art of photography, seeking out the various rhythms in nature, by allowing our imagination to flow like that of the many rivers, we will fully immerse ourselves in the powerful energy of this place. Despite many of the photographs in this series being particularly remote, all of the images in the gallery shown here are easily accessible. We will spend the day around the shores of Loch Morlich and the vast Rothiemurchus Forest, which is one of the best examples of ancient Caledonian Pine Forest in the Highlands. Home to classic Highland species such as red squirrel, pine marten and crested tit. Although the photographs in this series are monochrome, due to the time of year there will be a riot of colour. I can honestly say that the Cairngorm autumn colours are the most intense that I have witnessed in the UK. This workshop then, is most definitely not just for lovers of black + white photography!

Workshops for 2025 now also include a one hour post processing tutorial, via Zoom. I believe that capturing the image is only the first part of the process. In producing our best work, the post processing stage is where we can hone our own unique aesthetic. This is an opportunity for participants to get essential feedback and for me to share my own thoughts and experience with you.

Please bring a packed lunch/drink for the day and suitable outdoor clothing to protect you from the very varied conditions, good walking boots and a waterproof coat being essential items. There are no arduous treks on this particular workshop. Expect leisurely loch side/forest ambling.

The location is very close to the busy Highland town of Aviemore. There are lots of accommodation options in this area. Please feel free to contact me for recommendations.

This workshop will take place on the 26th October 2025 (8:45am - 3:30pm) and will be limited to 5 participants so you get plenty of 1-2-1 tuition throughout the day.

Cost £150 per person - 5 places available
